Semen sample for fertilization

instructions for treatment / i / gynaecology/ VSSHp 2009.1.

A semen sample for fertilization is to be delivered to the Fertility laboratory at the Turku University Hospital which is located at the Gynaecological Outpatient Ward, on the third floor of the U Hospital (the main entrance floor), tel. (02) 313 2357.

Insemination

The sample is to be delivered to the laboratory on the morning of the insemination day between 07:30 and 08:00.
IVF (in vitro fertilization) and ICSI (microinjection)
The sample is to be collected at around 10 o’clock on the day when egg cells are collected.

Sample taking and transporting

The sample collected at home has to be at the Fertility laboratory within one hour after the sample has been collected. The semen sample has to be well protected from hot and cold. The sample is well preserved in room temperature (20ºC).

If the sample cannot be brought in for examination within one hour, it should be collected in the collection room at the outpatient ward.

  • The semen sample is collected through masturbation. A condom cannot be used in the collection of semen, as the condom damages the sperm cells.
  • A minimum of 3, but no more than 7 days should have passed since the previous ejaculation. The date of the previous ejaculation is entered in the preliminary information form.
  • The ejaculation is directly aimed in the collection jar. One should try to get all the ejaculated semen directly into the jar.

Please remember that

according to a directive by the State Provincial Office in Sept. 2004 the man himself has to bring the semen sample to the Gynaecological Outpatient Ward at the Turku University Hospital, where the identity is checked (driver’s license, identity certificate with picture).

Do return a signed consent for treatment (3 documents) at the latest when you bring the semen sample. Without a valid consent for treatment the sample CANNOT BE used in fertilization.
